Decorating tips

  1. The first step in decorating a room is the creation of a floor plan. The floor plan is a bird’s eye view of the room drawn to scale, (usually 1/4″ = 1′).
  2. Do not paint the room without deciding on the curtain fabric, upholstery and carpets. It is easy to get the color you need for your walls but not so easy to pick your upholstery and curtaining.
  3. Create conversation areas rather than keeping furniture hugging the walls.
  4. Have a traffic path so that the movement of people is not hindered by furniture.
  5. Take in to account the purpose for which the room is used and design the interior to aid the functionality of the room.(i.e. When placing a bed, give sufficient room for a person to get in and out of a bed /  The distance between the armchairs and the sofa should not be more than 8″ – 14″ apart to facilitate conversation, etc.)
  6. The furniture in a room should be properly balanced, taking into account the scale and height of the furniture.
  7. Create harmony through repetition of colors, groupings of accessories or furniture.
  8. Use optical illusions by means of color, scale of furniture or accessories to expand or contract a space.

Patio or Varanda Design

Patio / Varanda Design

A Front Porch or Varanda (as commonly known in Asian countries) should give some indications of the mood within the house.  This is the place where the visitor first sets his or her eyes. It should have a welcoming presence with plants to connect with the outdoors.

Room Accessories, Focal Point and Color Contrast

The beauty of a room can be enhanced by accessorizing it in different ways. Walls can be adorned with art, antique plates, mats, ornaments, etc., based on the overall mood it is intended to portray. Accessories should be picked carefully keeping in mind that the overall picture should be balanced and the mood not disturbed by excessive accessories or by using those that clash with each other.

The other important element in designing a room is to ensure that the layout is arranged around a “focal point”. This can be a painting, an architectural element, series of windows or anything which attracts the attention of the viewer as he / she enters the room. Some times a focal point is found as part of the architecture of a room and in other instances, it is created by using the furniture and material at hand.

Wall Art is another method of giving a romantic touch to a room, provided it harmonizes with the rest of the decor. In the photograph below, the border along the top edge of a wall, picks the floral pattern from the curtains in the room.

Color Contrast

The photograph below depicts the glamor that can be brought into a room with the artful use of colors that contrast yet harmonize with each other.

The carefully selected flooring and the tall windows filtering light from the northern side of the house gives it a cool and airy feeling.
