- The first step in decorating a room is the creation of a floor plan. The floor plan is a bird’s eye view of the room drawn to scale, (usually 1/4″ = 1′).

- Do not paint the room without deciding on the curtain fabric, upholstery and carpets. It is easy to get the color you need for your walls but not so easy to pick your upholstery and curtaining.
- Create conversation areas rather than keeping furniture hugging the walls.
- Have a traffic path so that the movement of people is not hindered by furniture.
- Take in to account the purpose for which the room is used and design the interior to aid the functionality of the room.(i.e. When placing a bed, give sufficient room for a person to get in and out of a bed / The distance between the armchairs and the sofa should not be more than 8″ – 14″ apart to facilitate conversation, etc.)
- The furniture in a room should be properly balanced, taking into account the scale and height of the furniture.
- Create harmony through repetition of colors, groupings of accessories or furniture.
- Use optical illusions by means of color, scale of furniture or accessories to expand or contract a space.
